You can make quality, great looking websites in minutes with zero coding experience and optimized designs, choosing from a wide variety of templates for personal or business use.
Ideal for beginners who need a feature-rich website builder that’s easy to use.
MotoCMS offers a simple sign-up process that gets you into the dashboard quickly once you’ve set up a plan. If you’re not ready to dive into a plan right away you can use the trial version to tour the system and decide if it’s right for you.
Once inside, MotoCMS offers an intuitive interface that gets you right into adding pages and designing the layout of the website. The dashboard uses simple-to-navigate drop down menus with pop-up help options for each area to help guide you through the experience of setting up your website.
As far as content management systems go, it’s extremely easy to use and access the most relevant features for getting a site up and running. Even the sleek design elements of the platform lend themselves to making it a joy to use.
Being a content management system MotoCMS uses widgets and plugins to improve the functionality of the website. Most of these widgets are designed to add value to the user rather than enhance website design. This includes plugins for Mailchimp (email marketing) along with social plugins for Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest as well as Soundcloud and Slideshare.
Part of the major benefit with MotoCMS is the massive selection of templates – over 2,500 that range from free to paid premium templates. Many of the templates are such high-quality in design and functionality that they rival even professional complex site designs.
You won’t find a purchasable add-on or inclusion of blogging features with MotoCMS, which is a bit of a disappointment. However, there are plenty of 3rd party blogging options available online that you can use for free.
There is an ecommerce plugin available along with a large selection of media to help improve the level of engagement on your website as you’re designing it. There aren’t a ton of features comparative to other website builders however the features that are available knock it out of the park for a standard builder package.
The pricing can be a bit complex with MotoCMS. Pricing is based on the number of templates you want to gain access to. Essentially the platform itself is free to use and you pay for the individual templates – or they can be purchased in bulk.
Beyond the template purchase you’ll need to pay for add-ons like the ecommerce plugin and an installation service can also be purchased to make it easier to streamline the setup of your website.
A micro-transaction setup with website building isn’t ideal but it’s a better choice than paying a monthly fee for something you may not use very often.
Templates advertised on MotoCMS start at $139 per template with discounts per template available if you buy them in bulk. The eCommerce add-on is $99 if you want to start selling online.
While the price for the templates may seem high, they are professionally and exceptionally designed. Template options include HTML and MOTO CMS with design for mobile compatibility.
What is most appreciated about the template selection is that you are greeted on setup with options to match your interests or business. This helps steer you to the right templates that best match the kind of website you’re trying to build. That’s extremely helpful given the option of some 2,500 different designs.
The HTML templates do require a hosting server running PHP v. 5.2 or 5.3 or better; Zend Optimizer or Zend Guard Loader to run the software on. That’s fairly common with most hosting platforms so you shouldn’t have an issue. If you want to skip the installation you can pay a small extra fee for MotoCMS to handle the install for you.
You won’t find anything groundbreaking or innovative with the paid eCommerce plugin but it provides everything you need to get the job done right.
The eCommerce plugin includes product, category and brand management, customer management, optimization (SEO) options for each product along with order management. There are also customizable payment options but your choices for payment processing are limited to 2Checkout and PayPal.
It was nice to a see a simpler eCommerce plugin that still included a good spread of cart and customer analytics to help with improving store/product performance.
MotoCMS prides itself on slick design and efficient functionality and it delivers in that regard. Coupled with the selection of quality templates, it’s a great choice for a website builder as long as you’re not looking for anything that is feature packed with a lot of extra value.
