GoDaddy says Small Business Owners are Happier

Getting a small business off the ground is a lot of work, but a joint study by Zogby Analytics and Internet giant GoDaddy reveals that self-employment is well worth the struggle.

During the summer of 2014, more than 500 entrepreneurs with GoDaddy websites participated in a survey about their businesses, their quality of life, and the role of online marketing in their success. Overall, these self-employed small-business owners stated that they enjoy a healthier lifestyle, greater control over how they spend their time, and an improved outlook on their life and work.

Here’s a closer look at some of the survey’s findings:

Why They Took the Leap

The business owners surveyed said adios their employers for a number of reasons, and financed their ventures in a variety of ways.

  • 26% left the rat race after spotting an opportunity that was too good to pass up

  • 25% abandoned their former jobs to pursue their passion

  • 23% were fed up with working for others, and decided to take back their freedom

  • 16% started their own business to have more time for themselves, or to spend with their families

  • 66% got their businesses off the ground with the help of credit cards and savings accounts; 9% used a bank loan, and 7% asked for money from friends and family.

A Bit About Their Businesses

Of the businesses started by the survey respondents, there were more than 100 unique types of endeavors. 43% offered professional services, 14% position themselves as consultants, 11% run retail operations, and 5% are involved in the manufacturing industry. Here are some more facts that the survey found:

  • 25% of the business owners launched their venture within the past three years, while 53% have been operating for more than seven years

  • 55% of those surveyed said that they work from a dedicated home office, 12% reported running their business from a kitchen table, 6% have offices on wheels and work while on the road, and 1% don’t even bother to get out of bed

  • 72% of the entrepreneurs have five or fewer employees, while 46% are eager to see their business grow twice as large

  • Despite the fact that 53% of the entrepreneur reported earning less than $150,000 in annual revenue, 90% of all respondents expressed an ambition to grow their business into a $20 million enterprise

Biggest Benefits of Self-Employment

By a large margin, the business owners who participated in the survey reported a greater level of satisfaction in their lives, thanks, in part, to using GoDaddy’s website templates and GoDaddy’s blog templates to build their businesses’ online presence.

  • 83% stated they are much happier now, compared to when they were employees, including 56% who claimed to be “very happy.” Fewer than 4% of the respondents said they were not as happy as when they were employed by others.

  • 88% reported a greater level of optimism about both their personal and professional futures

  • 53% said they are currently more physically active and 72% stated that they now eat a healthier diet in comparison with their former employment

  • Over half of those surveyed (56%) claim to wear whatever they like while working

  • 62% enjoy an unstructured schedule, compared to 36% of the small business owners, who said they work regular office hours

Role of Online Marketing

Though all of the entrepreneurs who took the survey use online marketing to grow their businesses, not all of them use the same strategy. They do, however, overwhelmingly agree that a mix of social media and owning the right domain name play an invaluable role in their businesses’ growth.

  • 83% of respondents stated that their website plays an integral role in their business

  • 4% said that their business would thrive even without a website, believing that they could exclusively rely on social media

  • 28% claim that just having a website was good enough for them, and that social media isn’t a necessary component in their business strategy

  • 58% agreed that it’s important to have both a website and a social media presence to maintain business growth

  • Business owners who launched their web presence with the help of GoDaddy reported a 41% boost in their business, compared to 20% who said it was inconsequential
